Huang Di Dien

Huang Di Dien Eastern Peak, Huang Di Dien Western Peak

Several months after my unsuccessful hike to Huang Di Dien, this time not alone, I already passed this wonderful hike. Our group was quite small, just me, Michal and an American girl called Candice, because Jakub was with other group and Edward was too tired (rather don't ask him why :) ).

We have met in front of our dormitory in 9 am and took MRT to Jingmei station, from where we took the 666 just into the "ninth circle of hell", the Shi Ting village. The village itself has not much to show but there are 2 excellent hikes on the surrounding mountains and one of them we took that day.

We took a road left just behind the police station and after several hundred meters we emerged in front of the stairs going up the hill. In that moment my phone ringed - it was Jakub. Let me explain the issue, because it is really humorous story! :)

Jakub found some hiking group in NTUST and asked them if he can join them for a hike on Saturday. First time they told him he is not good enough and he has no equipment, thus it is too dangerous and they won't allow him to go. Later they got mercy and accepted him, but all the way up the mountain they asked him if he is ok, if he doesn't need a break etc. How surprised they were when he told them they are to slow and he wants to split up with them to go the much more difficult way up alone!

So he returned back to the roots of the mountain and called me. We thought at first he is on the same mountain so we tried to meet together, but later we found out he is elsewhere and we have let him go alone. But now, let me finish the story :)

Jakub started the second, longer and much more difficult ascent by himself ... and he met them on the junction :D later he overran them and managed several sidewalks beside the originally planned straight trip with Taiwanese. I wonder, what the leader thought about him later. I would be red even on my ass for my previous totally out of line assumptions :D

Let's return to OUR trip. We took the stairs and after 45 minutes reached a mud path going slightly down (immediately after the primal and alternative ascent connects together). That was the place I had to turn back the last time, because after the strong storm the path was extremely slippery and I fell down several times just on few meters.
Before long we reached the stairs carved into the rock and on the ridge we reached the first chain ladder. The second one was close after the previous and then we finally reached on the top of the Huang Di Dien.

We took several pictures including the "1st peak, 2nd peak, Taipei 101, 4th peak, 5th peak" and went ahead. The 20 meters high chain ladder down was really funny. I really enjoyed this part of the trip even so the ladder was a little stupid idea (as it was slippery, with no space for your soles and it is really easy to squeeze your hands there).

We followed the ridge path and passed several nice viewpoints. Before long the ridge get really narrow (20 cm) with steep slopes on both sides. Most often the fence was present to support the uncertain hikers, however there were even areas where the fence should be and it was missing :)

There was a temple on one of the leveling slopes, but we didn't go in. On the next peak we have met a bunch of Taiwanese hikers (about 10 people) cooking noodles. We politely rejected their offerings and ate our own supplies.

We went still straight and climbed up to two more peaks via ropes before we have met a group of Asian-Americans who told us there is nothing ahead just a labyrinth of trees. That time we decided to turn back and took the second descent to climb down the mountain ridge (the third one was somewhere behind the labyrinth).

We passed several ruins covered with moss on our way down and after a while we reached the concrete road. The sign said "3.6 km -> 180 minutes to Shi Ting". In that moment I doubted we are on the right place, because the way should be only on concrete from that time till the bus stop and this seems much more like we should climb some vertical walls on the way. Soon after I found out there is some mistake as 2.5 km was mentioned as 40 minutes : )

We came to the bus stop in 30 minutes from the first (false) sign. The bus arrived after half an hour. Even so we turned back quite soon (15:30), we arrived back to our campus after 18:00.
